A country cottage fantasy in the heart of the suburbs
It is the kind of garden you might expect to find alongside a chocolatebox cottage in the heart of the countryside.Yet the flowerfilled space created by annie godfrey doesn surround a rural retreat it sits behind a thirties excouncil house in the middle of a busy town north of london.
Annie, 47, whose southfacing plot attracts hundreds of curious visitors when it opens each year for the national gardens scheme, says:Enjoy seeing the look of astonishment on their faces when they see the garden for the first time.It could not be more different from the humdrum plot annie took on in 1995 when she moved into the house in hertfordshire with partner steve machin, 51, who has lived there since he was a teenager. At that time there was a concrete patio, a lawn fringed with narrow borders and a path leading to a shed.
Annie, who trained in garden design at capel manor college in enfield, north london, replaced the patio with a stone terrace and carved out some bigger borders in the lawn.
The garden evolved slowly over the next few years, but annie was not happy with its appearance. She decided to give the space an overhaul in 2009.She removed every last trace of lawn, laid a new gravel path and widened the borders, which were replanted in 2010.At the very bottom of the garden she added a circular seating area surrounded by scented perennials, shrubs and climbers.
As founder of daisy roots, a nursery specialising in rare and choice plants, annie loaded up a van with her favourite plants and arranged them in the empty beds.Packed them in tightly so you don see soil and weeds don get a chance to grow, says annie, who looks after the nursery and its gardendesign practice.Coowner steve carries out garden maintenance and sells the nursery wares at plant fairs.
Earlier in the year, the couple created their first garden at the chelsea flower show.Their gravel garden, featuring plants that tolerate drought conditions, won a royal horticultural society silver gilt medal.
Annie reckons her garden peaks in late summer.Step out of the back door of the house, past a golden flowered brugmansia in a pot, and you find a generous patio featuring a raised pond. The paved surface is peppered with containers, including some of her collection of pelargoniums.
A gravel path snakes its way to the back of the garden past a vibrant display of flowers.Rubbing shoulders are fiery orange montbretia(Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora fluffy pink sanguisorba and the huge white flowerheads of hydrangea arborescens adding texture to the display are stipa gigantea, panicum elegans explosion variegated miscanthus sinensis and other ornamental grasses.
Owners of small gardens often avoid growing tall plants or those with large leaves as they think they will overpower a compact space. However, annie thinks differently and includes plenty of imposing specimens.
She shows me one of her favourite statuesque plants a massive tree dahlia. The bamboolike stems of dahlia imperialis often reach heights of 15ft to 20ft.This tender perennial produces clusters of cupshaped pink flowers in late autumn and winter.
Follow the winding gravel path to the end and a couple of steps lead down to a sunken parcel of land, where retaining sleeper walls double as seats.
This part of the garden feels much calmer, with the surrounding beds filled with plants in softer shades.Due to being built at a lower level, this area cannot be seen by neighbouring houses, making it the perfect private retreat for annie to unwind with a glass of wine after a hard day work.
